Effective pain management system after knee surgery

Dear Sir, I would like to pass on my thoughts regarding my knee replacement operation. I was, as expected, apprehensive about the whole procedure. I would like to say that all the people involved, from registration through to discharge, did everything to make me comfortable and at ease. I had never had an epidural before, and the pre-op team put me completely at ease prior to the operation. They chatted and kept me occupied throughout the operation. I would like to say that the operation itself, and the post op pain management was excellent. I have friends who have had knee operations and had told me of the post op pain problems the suffered, using morphine drips etc. I had none of these problems. I only had the slow release painkillers overnight, needed nothing in the daytime only paracetamol. When I was discharged, except for the first night, I have had only had paracetamol while the initial bruising was coming out, but nothing in the daytime. The pain management system you incorporate in the operation stage is excellent; I for one would not hesitate to have this procedure in the future (if required) and feel it would be beneficial to other patients for these types of operations. Please pass on my comments and thanks to your team for a job well done, and making my operation and stay as comfortable as it was. Yours faithfully, Patient Y

Minimal pain medication required following knee replacement by Mr Moholkary

Dear Mr Moholkar I am writing to thank you for the very successful full knee replacement operation you carried out on the 13th May 2011. I had been told by many people, including a doctor that I could expect up to six months strong pain. Yes, for the first 10 days it was a fairly painful and found I could not keep my leg in one position for any length of time without it causing some pain, but that soon went. In fact the only discomfort I experienced occurred during my daily change of those blasted surgical stockings. I stopped taking the pain killing medication very early. By the time we had the six week meeting I was only taking one paracetamol a day as a precaution. As I had not experienced any pain I sometimes forgot even that. I got very frustrated in those six weeks I was not allowed do drive. I continued to do the exercise given to me by the physiotherapist. I started walking around the garden then on to walk along our village road, every day I went a bit further. My knee felt fine all of that time. Now six months on I can walk much further than I could before the operation, a mile over rough ground is no problem. I can truthfully say that I was pain free well within six weeks and have remained pain free. In fact my main problem has been to remember that I should not kneel on that knee. Once again, very many thanks Yours sincerely, Patient X

Mr Kirti Moholkar highly praised following double shoulder operation

In the last 20 months I have had to attend the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital on numerous occasions for various treatments. I have had to have two shoulder operations under Mr Moholkar and his team The treatment I have received has been outstanding. Your hospital in my opinion is a credit to all concerned and believe that all your staff are consummate professionals in whichever department they operate. All staff are courteous and helpful showing full respect for patient needs. The care and attention given on Ward 12 after my operation was tremendous, allowing me to be discharged within 3 days to compete my treatment at home. I was attended 3 times by the R.O.C. nursing staff at home. I did feel a little vulnerable after the final visit, perhaps more home visits after the hospital discharge may be considered to ensure patient confidence. I have just been discharged after being instructed about care and attention for the next 6 to 8 weeks and hopefully I will now be able to enjoy a more full and active life. Once again I can only praise all your staff most highly and thank you for the care I have received. As a token of my thanks I have enclosed a small donation to the trust fund where it may possibly go to the children’s department, as they are the future. Yours sincerely, Patient Y

Mr Moholkar’s professional care acknowledged after successful shoulder surgery

Dear Mr Moholkar I recently had surgery on my shoulder. I have never had surgery before and was very apprehensive about coming into hospital. I would like to thank you and your team for your professionalism, attentiveness, understanding, support, politeness from the moment I came for my fist consultation with yourself until my last appointment with you.

You hear so many bad things on television and in the press regarding hospitals regarding patient care, but I can assure you that was not the case with my experience. I cannot speak highly enough of the care I received. Many thanks for making my stay a pleasant one. Yours sincerely, Patient Y

Treatment: 16.6.09 Total knee replacement

Date: Letter 22.3.10 Dear Mr Moholkar Just a note to say how grateful I am to have my quality of life back after receiving a total knee replacement by you and your team. My husband and I have recently returned from a six week break on Majorca. The first holiday we have taken since my operation. Every day we walked and walked and climbed steps no trouble at all. I could not do this in January 2009 because of the pain and felt very proud of myself. Thank you again, Patient Y

Mr Moholkar’s skill and expertise praised following knee replacement

Dear Dr Moholkar I would just like to thank you and your team for the wonderful treatment I received when I came to the Royal Orthopaedic on the 19th June 2012 for a knee replacement operation. Through your skill and expertise I am now able to bend my knee without the agonising pain I had been experiencing. I know that in the near future I will need to return to have my right knee replaced, but although any operation is scary, I now do not have the dread or fear as I know what to expect and what can be achieved. I have such faith that I have vowed to do a sponsored walk as soon as I possibly can. Once again, thank you for the great help you have given me and I thank God that there are wonderful people like you, who have dedicated their lives to learn the skills that can improve the lives of others. May you have a long, healthy and happy life. Patient X

Successful knee replacement by Mr Moholkar improved patients quality of life

Between December 2010 and September 2011. The latter being a full knee replacement was performed by Mr Moholkar at the BMI at Edgbaston.
Knee Operation In September 2011 Mr Moholkar replaced by right knee at B.M.I. Edgbaston. After the operation as the feeling returned to my leg I expected the throbbing I had experienced with my shoulder to kick in. It did not happen. The only pain I experienced was on movement i.e. getting in and out of bed and of course physiotherapy. I had a good night’s sleep the first night after the operation and did not have a sleepless night throughout the recovery period.
After the Operation On Mr Moholkar’s first visit in hospital, I explained the differences in the pain levels between the two operations. He then explained how he had, with the help of others, experimented with painkillers resulting in various cocktails of drugs dependent on the general health of the patient. He also explained that it was difficult to substantiate any results as individuals, indeed, races have different pain thresholds. He was interested in my experiences as I had had two operations within nine months and their was such a major difference in the pain levels experienced. When I had my shoulder done the nurses informed me “If you think that your shoulder is painful, wait until your knee is done, that will be twice as painful.” They were so wrong of course thanks to Mr Moholkar and his team who have so obviously got it right. I hope that this account helps to substantiate the credibility of what Mr Moholkar and his team have achieved. It most certainly worked for me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Moholkar and his team for my increased mobility and quality of life. Yours sincerely, Patient Y

Knee replacement by Mr Moholkar gave patient new lease of life

Dear Mr Moholkar This is just to say a big “thank you” to you and your team for giving me my life back again. You replaced my left knee on 28th October last year. It has been a long and painful recovery but I am now functioning normally, far better than before the operation.

I can now do my favourite walks, go and down steps properly and be on the go for a couple of hours before needing to sit. I still have some discomfort but am continuing with the exercises which help. Thank you so much for giving me a new lease of life. Yours sincerely, Patient X

Mr Moholkar thanked for double knee replacement

Dear Mr Moholkar – Surgeon After last Thursdays x-rays and consultant, you felt it appropriate to discharge me back to my own doctor. A follow-up visit was proposed for 5 (five) years time. My treatment at ROH has included four knee operations over the years: in which you have been very much involved. You changed my life! I must say at every stage I have been extremely pleased and satisfied with the treatment and aftercare experienced.

Your individual skills are obviously beyond reproach, and those of your teams and nurses have proved to be exemplary. So much so, that upon many occasions I have been more than happy to recommend the ROH to my friends and colleagues, where appropriate. Can I wish you and the ROY team all the best for the future. Long may your success continue. Yours sincerely, Patient Y

Patient awake throughout ground-breaking knee operation performed by Mr Kirti Moholkar

Dear Mr Moholkar I recently sent a letter to the Doctors and Nurses of Ward 12 thanking them for their kindness and caring following the operation you carried out to replace my knee and I think it is now only fair to also thank you personally. With hindsight and seven weeks after the operation I think I was lucky to actually take part in what I am sure was a ground-breaking operation, and I was able to hear what was going on at the same time. However, I was also happy not to be able to understand what the team was actually saying!!! So…. Although I was aware of what was going on of course I felt no pain and whatever “happy” drug you gave me made be also aware of where I was but at the same time quite content to be there! This euphoric feeling continued through the trolley pushing through corridors, the recuperation ward and eventually into my own bed in a most comfortable private room. I know the NHS does quite often have bad publicity from time to time and all I can say is “everyone should all be treated in the Royal Orthopaedic”, and I shall continue in the future to energetically “fly the flag” for you all. Many, many thanks again for your help and caring. All I need now is the patience to continue with my exercises, etc, until I am once again fully mobile. Sincerely, Patient Y

Treatment: Consultation

JDate: 23.8.15 Dear Mr Moholkar On Thursday 18th August, you saw me in your consulting suite. Your explanation of my left knee difficulties was totally clear and enabled me to plan my future. I am most grateful to you for competence in diagnosis and the time oyu gave me to explain the condition to a layman. Thank you for your courtesy. I should also like to compliment the radiographer for her efficiency. I found the modern equipment fascinating. Yours sincerely, Patient X

Partial knee replacement performed by Mr Moholkar gave patient their life back

Dear Mr Moholkar I wish to thank you and your team for the treatment I received in the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. It was a positive experience all the way through. The staff were kind and everything was explained to me in a way I could understand. I had an oxford partial knee replacement. Prior to having my operation I was in constant pain day and night. Walked with a bad limp which cause further pain in other joints. I had reached an all time low, very depressed and on the point of losing my job. My operation has been a complete success. I would say to anyone needing this operation, be prepared for pain before gain and the key is to do your exercises. I have slight pain but do not even need a painkiller to cope. I feel after looking on from the side lines I now join in with activity I thought had long gone. I know my knee replacement didn’t save my life but Dear Mr Moholkar it gave me mine back. I am truly grateful. Thank you, Patient X

Mr Moholkar shows professionalism after partial knee replacement

I feel that I have to write to you and say how much I appreciated the professional care and kindness I received in your hospital. I was admitted on the 2.4.07 for a half knee replacement and had my final follow up check up on the 28th November, My consultant surgeon was Mr Moholkar, for whom I have great respect and admiration. Also for all the nursing staff I came into contact with in whatever capacity, the theatre staff (what I can remember of them), the x-ray team, the MRI team, the domestic staff, in fact all staff including the switchboard and administration have been helpful and understanding. You have a wonderful hospital, please take care of it and keep doing what you are all doing at present. With your approach and team one feels a person and not a number. That makes a whole difference to what is a traumatic experience. I would appreciate you passing my comments and best wishes to all concerned. Yours sincerely, Patient

+ Shoulder Surgery

Date: Letter 22.3.10

Dear Mr. Moholkar,

Just a note to say how grateful I am to have my quality of life back after receiving a total knee replacement by you and your team. My husband and I have recently returned from a six week break on Majorca. The first holiday we have taken since my operation. Every day we walked and walked and climbed steps no trouble at all.  I could not do this in January 2009 because of the pain and felt very proud of myself.

Thank you again, Patient Y
